James Shapland

James Shapland is Co-Founder and former CEO of Coffee #1.  He sold the business to Welsh brewer SA Brain in 2011 for a record sum.  Under his tenure Coffee #1 won Best Coffee Chain in the UK over four consecutive years.  The business also appeared in the Welsh Fast Growth 50 on three separate occasions.  Coffee #1 is on track to open its 100th location in 2018. 

Prior to Coffee #1 James was a European Equity Sales Analyst at Investment Bank Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein.  He was based in Paris where he served French Institutional Clients. James is Founder and CEO of Serious Dough, a sourdough pizza concept he is looking to launch across market towns in Wales.

James is also Founder and CEO of Serious Homes, a residential property company which he formed in 2017.  He has completed the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Programme at Stanford University.  He also holds the Certificate in Business Excellence from Columbia Business School and is an active supporter of the Eugene Lang Centre for Entrepreneurship.  He has also completed the Business Growth Programme at Cranfield School of Management.

He is currently co-authoring “Exit Strategy – 10 Key Variables for Successful Sale” with John Richardson. James is an avid wine collector and specialist.  He is currently completing the WSET 3 – Advanced Level, Italian Wine Professional and American Wine Expert.
