Andy Richardson

Chair, Food & Drink Wales Industry Board

Having graduated in Agriculture at Seale Hayne in the late 1980s, Andy’s early career was spent in Unilever and BOCM PAULS advising dairy farmers in Oxfordshire and Somerset. In 2000 he moved to dairy nutrition business Volac where he has held a number of roles including Head of Marketing and Corporate Affairs.

Andy believes passionately in the role Agriculture and Food plays in the UK economy, healthy consumers and as custodians of natural capital. He believes in cutting through complexity and in the lasting impact which true collaboration can achieve.

Andy’s contribution in providing this leadership includes: chairing the Welsh Government’s Food & Drink Board which aims to increase turnover from food & drinks businesses by 30% by 2020; being a member of the UK Food & Drink Council, which aims to improve the productivity and sustainability of the industry; leading a collaborative initiative which aims to enhance the productivity of the UK dairy sector; completing a review of the Welsh dairy industry in 2015 for the Government, then subsequently chairing the Dairy Leadership Board; initiating and leading the ‘Protein Challenge 2040’ – a global collaboratory involving international companies to create a more sustainable supply and demand of protein for human and animal consumption; establishing Dairy 2020 – a sustainability strategy for the UK dairy industry which brought together 50 stakeholders; stablishing the UK dairy strategy ‘Leading the Way in collaboration with Defra, AHDB and NFU for the Defra Minister; working with Cambridge University to advise Government on UK land use and impact of dairy on natural capital.
